Quail Tracking and More in Indian Creek Spring Newsletter

For the first time in the South Carolina Piedmont, quail are being tracked with GPS units to learn more about their movements, reproduction, and patterns during each season. Fourteen birds representing six distinct coveys were outfitted with transmitters in March and will be monitored throughout the year in an effort to see which types of habitat are used, when they are used, and how the birds respond to pressure from land management and hunting.

The article by Seth Sofferin, Quail Forever biologist for Indian Creek, explains more about how the quail were tagged and how the data will be collected and used to make better habitat management decisions.

Also in the newsletter is an excellent planning tool for habitat work this spring and summer by SCDNR biologist Dan Peeples. He provides a number of tips for assessing your land and how to effectively manage what you find. Equally as important, he mentions several things to avoid during the coming months that will prevent more work down the road.

Download a copy of the newsletter below and read about these and other happenings in the Indian Creek Focal Area.
