A New Chapter for Public Land in the Upstate: The Enoree River Tract
Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever have announced a new Build a Wildlife Area project in Newberry County, South Carolina: the Enoree River Tract. It adds public land, quail habitat, and a better way to manage fire on the landscape.
Why it matters for the National Forest
The tract has been added to the Sumter National Forest's Enoree Ranger District, which makes up roughly 170,000 of the forest's 370,442 acres. It is also the first Build a Wildlife Area project that Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever have completed in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service.
There's a practical benefit too. Adding the property gives the Forest Service more capacity to conduct prescribed fire, because existing roads and Big Dryer Creek can serve as natural fire breaks.
Work already underway
Since acquiring the property, Quail Forever staff have been managing it for wildlife. That work includes:
Conducting prescribed burns to improve habitat
Creating fire breaks
Controlling invasive and undesirable species
Who made it happen
The project was funded with support from the U.S. Forest Service and from the chapters, members, partners, and donors who support the Build a Wildlife Area program. We are thrilled to see SCBI members working together to make projects like this happen.
